Research is structured in a multidisciplinary way to explore underlying pathogenic mechanisms in specific disease states, from which novel approaches to prophylaxis and therapy may be devised and evaluated; pathological conditions under investigation include diabetes, ageing, obstructive airway diseases, asthma, microbial infection of mucosal and implanted surfaces, and host reactions to implanted materials; particular emphasis is placed on offering ultimate practical application in the healthcare field.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent qualification in relevant area; or appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level; candidates with relevant Master's degree or recognised equivalent or substantial appropriate research leading to published work may be registered directly for PhD.

Course modules

All years: Disease processes; molecular mechanisms and design; microbiology; biomedical materials; biogeography and ecology.

Sponsorship information

Funding may be available from local and foreign governments; European funded projects; BBSRC; EPSRC; Wellcome Trust and pharmaceutical industry.
