Advanced Social Work with Children and Families

This programme provides continued professional education for registered social workers who are currently working with children and young people, their families and carers. The programme leads to one of three awards and is organised so that you may have the opportunity to continue on and register for the MSc, whether you enter at Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma level.

Entry requirements

Professional social work qualification (or equivalent) and current registration with the HCPC. An Honours degree (or equivalent qualification demonstrated through experience in the field), and a demonstrated ability to study at postgraduate level.

Course modules

Core units: Child development, health and wellbeing; contemporary law and policy for child welfare services; assessment, risk and decision-making; social work with children and families with complex needs. Optional units: advanced practice in communication and direct work with children; advanced practice with looked-after children; adoption, fostering and kinship care; inter-professional working and integrated services; leadership and management in social work; philosophy and research design in the social sciences; researching child and family welfare; supervision and assessment of professional practice; dissertation.
