Mathematics Education

This programme is aimed at mathematics teachers and other professionals working in mathematics education. The key emphasis is on professional development, and we will help students to: develop their teaching skills; update their mathematics research key issues in their teaching; link theory and practice; discover the latest research in the field of mathematics education.

Entry requirements

Applicants for this programme must have a minimum of 1 year's teaching experience in the relevant area. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are not eligible for entry to the programme. In order to gain entry to the programme, applicants must provide the following: transcript of their undergraduate degree results (for students who have already completed their undergraduate degree, this should show final results. Current undergraduate students should provide an interim transcript or letter from their institution, outlining their results so far); for applicants whose 1st language is not English; proof of proficiency in English.

Course modules

Core unit: introduction to educational inquiry; teaching and learning in mathematics; curriculum design and development in school mathematics; children learning mathematics (school-based enquiry); dissertation. Optional units: addressing controversial issues in education; assessment in schools; children learning maths; collaboration across professional contexts in special and inclusive education; contemporary perspective on learning; counselling young people and families; designing technologies for learning; developing as an education researcher; developing research engaged practice in science education; developmental psychology; education, inequality and social justice; education policy in a global context ethical issues in education; globalisation and the politics of English language; inclusive working for parents and carers; issues in neuroscience and education; leading on behaviour in schools; learning in online communities; managing people in education; mentoring and coaching; multivariate statistical methods in education; professional development through collaborative working on an issue in education; professional development through collaborative working on an issue in mathematics education; psychophysiological methods in educational research; school subject updating; science update; social and socio psychology; supervised individual study; the psychology of individual differences; understanding and using counselling skills in education.
