Areas of research include: gene structure and recombination in cereals; DNA recombination and repair in bacteria; site-specific recombination in bacterial plasmids and control of bacterial cell cycle; cytological, genetic and molecular studies of genome organisation, gene structure and gene action in Drosophila; behaviour, synaptic transmission and intracellular signalling in Drosophila; theoretical and experimental studies of natural and sexual selection in insects and birds; population genetics of plant-parasite relationships, speciation in plants, conservation genetics; plant development, gene expression and molecular biology; analysis and manipulation of mammalian chromosomes; origins of polarity in drosophila embryos; function of genes in kidney development and inherited disease; embryonic nervous system development; analysis of centromere function; cellular polarity in drosophila; development and sex determination in caenorhabditis; study of neuron-glia interactions in formation of nervous system of drosophila; electrophysiology and imaging of synaptic transmission in drosophila; use of segmentation of drosophila embryo as model system to study morphogenesis; studies of structure of mitotic apparatus and regulation of its function; studies on mitotic mutants in drosophila; structure and function of sox-domain genes in drosophila; study of systems involved in mineralisation of key pollutants using bacterium Rhodococcus; plant molecular genetics and recombination; early mouse development; in addition to the course fee (university composition fee) students may have to pay a college fee.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd class Honours degree or overseas equivalent; applicants whose 1st language is not English must demonstrate competence in English (IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each element; or other acceptable test).
