Human Nutrition

Research areas include: nutritional vulnerability in specific population groups, particularly infants, children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, the elderly, people in developing countries; role of nutrition in the development of health problems, including vascular disease and hypertension, degenerative eye disease, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, nutrition in early life and later consequences; research at mitochondrial research unit is focused on: conversion of energy derived from oxidation of sugars and fats to adenosine triphosphate (ATP); structure and mechanism of the ATP synthase; transport of ATP, ADP, phosphate and other substrates; mitochondrial diseases; cellular regulation of nutrient and energy turnover; influence of nutrients in food on health and longevity; in addition to the course fee (university composition fee) students may have to pay a college fee.

Entry requirements

1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree or overseas equivalent; applicants whose 1st language is not English must demonstrate their proficiency via a formal test (IELTS overall score 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each element; TOEFL score 600 with TWE 5.0).

Sponsorship information

4 MRC PhD Studentships per year are available to UK/EU students; applications from international students who are applying to funding sources such as the Gates Cambridge (International), CCT/COT(including CISS) are also welcome; students who have secured their own funding should contact the relevant supervisor to discuss a potential project outline and details of funding arrangements; it is highly desirable for students to have made prior contact with a potential supervisor to ensure the project is within the remit of the work at MRC HNR; this should be done before any application to the university, where an application fee is charged by the university.
