Combining advanced study and research, this programme is designed for students who wish to extend their knowledge of finance or financial engineering. The programme provides research led teaching and is particularly suitable for those intending to continue to a PhD. The degree also provides a strong academic background for those aiming for a career in finance.

Entry requirements

1st Class Honours or equivalent with significant economics or quantitative component. Normally no more than one year of work experience (between graduation and enrolment, excluding vacation employment and internships). Applicants whose 1st language is not English should have an IELTS minimum overall score of 7.5 with not less than 7.0 in each element; or TOEFL minimum overall score of 110, with not less than 25 in each element; or CAE minimum score of grade A or B (with at least 193 in each individual element) plus a language centre assessment; or CPE score of grade A, B or C (with at least 200 in each individual element).

Course modules

Modules: pre-course reading: preparatory course in mathematics and statistics; corporate finance 1; fundamentals of competitive markets; econometrics 1 or econometric methods; corporate finance 2; asset pricing 1; econometrics 2 (or cross section and panel data econometrics or further time series with applications in finance and macroeconomics); asset pricing 2.

Assessment methods

Assessment across the nine courses will be by written examination, project, or coursework, depending upon the nature of the particular course. If the dissertation option is chosen in place of three modules, a 12,000 word thesis is required, with no oral exam.
