Assyriology

The course introduces students with little or no previous knowledge to the study of Ancient Mesopotamia in the historical period and allows those with some previous experience to enhance their understanding; it provides a good knowledge of 1 (or both) of the principal languages of Ancient Mesopotamia, Akkadian and Sumerian, and allows study of aspects of Mesopotamian culture, from 5000 BC through the earliest literate and urban societies of the Near East to the Assyrian and Babylonian empires.

Entry requirements

High 2.1 Honours Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification required.
IELTS score of 7.5.

Course modules

Modules typically offered include: Akkadian (Elementary Akkadian language and texts or Advanced Akkadian language and texts), Sumerian language and texts, Mesopotamian culture, Archaeology of Mesopotamia, Topics in Mesopotamian history and archaeology.

Assessment methods

Assessment method is dependent on module selection but may include essays, reports, book reviews, laboratory projects, research designs, oral presentations and written examination. All MPhil students are required to produce a dissertation is of maximum 15,000 words which constitutes 50 percent of the student's final mark.

Sponsorship information

The Division of Archaeology enters exceptionally strong MPhil candidates for Gates Cambridge, CHESS and AHRC scholarships and scholarship schemes administered by the Cambridge Trust. The Division of Archaeology also administers several funds which aim to support Archaeological fieldwork, Egyptology and Assyriology at MPhil level and will endeavour to support students in obtaining funding from University and external sources.
