University of Cambridge
The course introduces students with little or no previous knowledge to the study of Ancient Mesopotamia in the historical period and allows those with some previous experience to enhance their understanding; it provides a good knowledge of 1 (or both) of the principal languages of Ancient Mesopotamia, Akkadian and Sumerian, and allows study of aspects of Mesopotamian culture, from 5000 BC through the earliest literate and urban societies of the Near East to the Assyrian and Babylonian empires.
The Division of Archaeology enters exceptionally strong MPhil candidates for Gates Cambridge, CHESS and AHRC scholarships and scholarship schemes administered by the Cambridge Trust. The Division of Archaeology also administers several funds which aim to support Archaeological fieldwork, Egyptology and Assyriology at MPhil level and will endeavour to support students in obtaining funding from University and external sources.
