Topics covered include: Latin American literature, cinema and visual arts; Latin American cities; inequality in Latin America; violence and human development challenges; and race in Latin America.

Entry requirements

1st Class (or high 2.1) Honours degree from UK university, or equivalent; all applicants whose 1st language is not English, require an IELTS score of 7.5 (with a minimum of 7.0 in each individual component); the certificate of advanced English (CAE) is accepted with a grade A in the first instance, however applicants must also be assessed by the university language centre; the certificate of proficiency in English (CPA) is accepted with a grade A or B only if the certificate is awarded no more than 2 years before the start of the course.

Course modules

Modules include: Inequalities in Latin America; Latin American film and visual arts; Latin American literary culture; cities in Latin America; Latin America: violence and human; development challenges; race and indigeneity in Latin America.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on 3 essays and a 15000-word research dissertation.

Sponsorship information

Eligible students can for Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) studentships. Fully-funded scholarships are also available from The Gates Trust and Cambridge Trusts. All applicants are also automatically considered for Simon Bolivar bursaries, covering part of the costs of the MPhil.
