1st Class or 2.1 degree in biological, medical or physical sciences or a financial or legal background and demonstrable strong interest in pursuing a business career in the life science sector; an IELTS score of 7.5 and postgraduate experience in an academic, industrial, or business environment is highly advantageous but not essential.
Modules include: small molecule and biotherapeutic drug development; medical devices and diagnostics; agbiotech; business management skills; strategy; decision-making; accounting and finance; financial analysis; company and healthcare economics; regulatory issues; intellectual property; corporate law; skills associated with bringing scientific opportunities to market; understanding how biotech businesses are created, funded and successfully developed; practical group activities; university business plan competitions; consulting project; 3-month internship with a life science company.
Assessment is based on class participation and learning through practical team-work in the research, preparation, and delivery of presentations; written submissions include 2 extended science and technology in business papers; a number of short reports and critical appraisals; a consulting project report; dissertation of 10,000 words based on research and analysis conducted during the internship placement; extracurricular enterprise activities including business plan competitions; submission of a business plan as a course assignment.
