The course is built upon principles of inclusion and equality of opportunity in teaching and learning for all students whatever their potential and achievements; trainees are encouraged to foster their own and their students' creativity through an enthusiastic commitment to adventurousness, exploration and systematic hard work within and beyond the classroom; trainees are also encouraged to develop an attitude of critical enquiry and see themselves as teachers who research their classrooms so that they make informed choices in all that they do; the course therefore provides a stimulating introduction to current theory and practice in the teaching of English.
Honours degree in English/drama or associated subjects required, and GCSE grade C (minimum) or equivalent in mathematics and English language; it is expected that all applicants for a PGCE course have undertaken at least 5-10 days recent work experience or observation in a mainstream UK state school, working alongside children within the appropriate age ranges for their course choice, and be able to draw on this experience in their application.
Subject teaching: focusing on the curriculum, principles and practice of teaching the subject; professional studies: the professional role of the teacher and aspects of teaching which are relevant to the whole school; professional placement: 24 weeks spread across 3 terms; trainees are placed in at least 2 contrasting partnership secondary schools, gradually taking on more responsibility for class teaching as the year progresses.
