Secondary Education (Mathematics)

Pupils who are functional in mathematics and financially capable are able to think independently in applied and abstract ways, and can reason, solve problems and assess risk; mathematics is a compulsory subject for pupils up to the age of 16; the mathematics course aims to familiarise students with the ways in which mathematics teaching and learning is organised across the secondary age and attainment range in the state sector, and with the variety of teaching approaches and resources available; the faculty based course is closely linked to a programme of classroom experience in local state schools, supervised by experienced teacher-mentors.

Entry requirements

Honours degree in mathematics or degree with high mathematical content required, and GCSE grade C (minimum) or equivalent in English language; a good level of mathematical knowledge, a passion for the subject and the desire to help pupils make sense of mathematics are important attributes for those who wish to teach maths; suitable degrees include those in mathematics, mathematics with statistics, computer science, engineering, physics, and some combinations within natural sciences; it is expected that all applicants for a PGCE course have undertaken at least 5-10 days recent work experience or observation in a mainstream UK state school, working alongside children within the appropriate age ranges for their course choice, and be able to draw on this experience in their application.

Course modules

Subject teaching: focusing on the curriculum, principles and practice of teaching the subject; professional studies: the professional role of the teacher and aspects of teaching which are relevant to the whole school; professional placement: 24 weeks spread across 3 terms; trainees are placed in at least 2 contrasting partnership secondary schools, gradually taking on more responsibility for class teaching as the year progresses
