University of Central Lancashire
Education (Lifelong Learning)
This programme is for those wishing to teach in the post-compulsory sector (further education and 6th form). It is not a school teaching qualification, but there are now employment opportunities in some schools for post-16 teachers, particularly for teachers of vocational subjects. Applicants who do not have a degree should enrol on the Certificate in Education programme. The aim of the programme is to prepare students to plan, implement, assess and evaluate teaching within post-16 education and undertake a full teaching role. All course work is related to the actual teaching practice situation, and this balance between theory and application underpins the programme. It is taught in UCLan's 13 partner colleges across the North West and covers all the requirements of a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).
All PGCE applicants must have the following: A 1st degree or equivalent; 5 GCSEs at C and above or equivalent as a minimum qualification, to include English; the ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English; a Level 3 (QCF) qualification in their teaching subject specialism, if other than their degree. Part-time: A teaching or training contract for a minimum of 150 hours of teaching over the course of the programme. Under exceptional circumstances a voluntary teaching placement maybe acceptable for part time applicants. Trainees on the full-time programme will undertake an appropriate teaching placement in consultation with the Initial Teacher Education provider. This course may involve regular access to children and/or vulnerable adults. Where this is the case, students will be required to obtain a enhanced clearning from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
