Strategic Communication

This course is designed for practising communication professionals; it is for people who want to develop their capacity to think strategically and are ready for a new and personally stretching intellectual challenge; students debate ideas with the enthusiastic teaching team and like minded participants; subjects include principles of strategic communication, technology and communication, rhetoric, internal communication, communication management, and research methods followed by a dissertation; the course is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR); graduates work as communication professionals in private, public and voluntary sector organisations.

Entry requirements

Designed for people who are currently employed in a public relations, corporate communications or related capacity, and for those with substantial previous work experience in those areas; good Honours degree (minimum 2.1) or equivalent professional qualification normally required.

Course modules

Year 1: Fundamentals of strategic communication; communication and technology; rhetoric. Year 2: Strategic communication management; internal communication: Theory, concepts and principles; qualitative and quantitative research methods; master's dissertation.

Assessment methods

Group projects during the residential weeks followed by individual assignments such as research reports, presentations, essays and projects, which may be applied to professional context; there are no formal examinations in this course.
