Maintenance Engineering with optional placement

The course content covers a range of subjects including technical elements associated with properties and the use of materials, machine reliability, manufacturing processes and simulation of mechanical systems; it covers important skills required by engineers such as research methods, project governance, finance and project planning; students are required to conduct a project focusing on the study of a problem related to mechanical or maintenance technology; topic of the project may be selected by the student and based on an industrial problem sourced by an industrial collaborator. You'll have the opportunity to complete an MSc with a 38-40 weeks professional placement or an MSc with 10-15 weeks work placement in addition to the standard MSc programme. Placements are as much about gaining an insight and understanding of the culture and language in the engineering profession as gaining technical skill and experience.

Entry requirements

MSc: A 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree in an engineering or science subject; or equivalent professional qualification; relevant qualifications and professional experience are considered; PgDip: A relevant degree in an engineering or science subject; or equivalent professional qualification; relevant qualifications and professional experience are considered.

Course modules

Modules includes: Project (engineering); research methods; design and operation of sustainable systems; advanced materials and materials selection; sustainable systems development; sensors, instrumentation and control; student initiated module full module; renewable energy technology; maintenance management strategies; advanced computer aided design.

Assessment methods

Assessement of learning is conducted by a range of methods including: tutorial questions, examination, use of on-line assessment via WebCT questions, extended assignments, presentations, poster defence, written reports.
