Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) with Applied Linguistics

This course will equip students with a thorough grounding in teaching methodology, classroom management, an in-depth knowledge of lexis, grammar and phonology, and the way in which language is learned. It will also help to develop the analytical and reflective skills students need to continue to develop as a professional.

Entry requirements

Lower 2nd Class Honours degree; teaching experience in language education (typically at least 1-2 years) and/or a pre-service certificate (Cambridge CELTA/trinity cert; TESOL or equivalent); English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-scores.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: Language analysis; methodology in TESOL; 2nd language acquisition; dissertation. Optional modules: Course and materials design; testing and assessment in TESOL; teaching language through literature; student initiated module in TESOL/applied linguistics; language in interaction; teaching English for academic and specific purposes; corpus-informed language teaching; computer-assisted language learning; world Englishes; TESOL work placement.

Assessment methods

A variety of assessment procedures are used including essays, portfolios, presentations, practical projects, and observation of teaching practice.
