The programme aims to facilitate the generation of original knowledge within organisations, conferring an academic award on those who have made a significant contribution to the knowledge base of their organisation; the staff within Chester Business School have a wide variety of research interests and experience in both the private and public sectors; the programme focusses on work based action learning and is structured to meet the demands of a busy working life; distinctive features of the programme: the ability to incorporate existing learning achievements (certificate and/or experience) into academic credit; review the student's whole career progression, achievements and plan for the future; engage in deep reflection on achievements in the light of enhanced personal self knowledge; develop a real expertise in areas of interest to the student and their organisation; personal tuition is combined with the use of technology to enhance learning; this js a structured, progressive programme of study; it leads to the acquisition of advance research skills; it forges new professional relationships with other high achieving practitioners; it develops and refines advanced cognitive skills with an emphasis on learning and management; students receive support and tuition from a team of experienced academics and practitioners; the programme is divided into 2 stages with students commencing their studies at Master's level; on completion of this stage, successful students can exit with a Master's in Professional Studies; students who continue on to doctoral level and study and successfully complete this stage of the programme are awarded a Doctorate in Professional Studies.
Entrants normally have a Master's qualification from a recognised University, together with a minimum of 5 years' experience in a position of substantial responsibility; candidates are normally interviewed prior to acceptance on the course.
Level 7 (Master's): Personal and professional review; research methods for work-based learning; negotiated experiential learning. Level 8 (Doctorate): Business research methods; action learning; major research project.
Generally a portfolio and written assignments, followed by a research project; there are no written examinations.
