Secondary Education (Mathematics)

The course attracts 60 credits at Master's level; the course is designated 11-16 with the option of receiving enhancement at post 16 level; successful completion of the programme enables the University to recommend Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); trainees enjoy a variety of educational experiences, including a subject enrichment week Mathamagic working with primary and secondary pupils, looking at physical, practical, engaging and collaborative mathematics activities and competitions.

Entry requirements

Degree or equivalent qualifications; or applicants in the final year of their degree programmes; the content of the degree should be appropriate to the secondary school curriculum in mathematics, usually at least 1/2 of the degree content is mathematics; applicants whose degree is in another subject, but have A-level mathematics (or equivalent) are accepted on to the course and are usually expected to complete a mathematics enhancement course to enrich and deepen their subject knowledge prior to the start of the PGCE; recommendation and application for these courses can be made following interview for the PGCE course; all applicants need to demonstrate a willingness and commitment to read widely in order to extend their subject and pedagogical knowledge; applicants must have gained GCSE grade C or above in mathematics and English language (or equivalent); the University would usually expect applicants to have had the equivalence of 2 weeks experience in a state secondary school, observing teachers in their chosen subject specialism, learning about the curriculum, taking part in working with pupils and reflecting upon the process of education.
