Secondary Education (Physical Education)
The course attracts 60 credits at Master's level; the course is designated 11-18 with the option of enhancement at post 16 level; successful completion of the programme enables the University to recommend Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); for physical education, the subject element of the PGCE programme aims to develop a sound understanding of the principles and practice of physical education; the learning process involves developing approaches to acquiring skill; making and applying decisions; developing physical and mental capacity; evaluating and improving performance; making informed decisions about healthy active lifestyles; all candidates wishing to gain QTS are required to pass skills tests in numeracy, literacy and information communication technology (ICT) before they can be recommended for QTS by the University.
Degree in physical education (minimum of 2nd Class Honours); GCSE grade C or above in mathematics and English language (or equivalent); the equivalence of 2 weeks experience in a state secondary school.
A distinctive feature of the course is subject enrichment week, which falls in the block between the 2 school placements; this course has been designed to consolidate and extend particular aspects of subject knowledge; for physical education, this has enabled trainees to engage in outdoor activities at the Conway Centre, Anglesey; students are expected to complete their training in 2 schools, which are allocated from the University's secondary school partnership; during these 2 placements, trainees are closely monitored by a mentor at the school who supports their progress in relation to the QTS standards.
Assessment methods include: Lesson observation feedback; development of subject knowledge; assignments and the submission of professional files.
