European Languages and Global Cultures

This course combines the study of a major European language (French, German, Spanish) and the examination of European cultures, with the opportunity to focus more closely on the language and culture of 1 particular country.

Entry requirements

Minimum of lower 2nd Class Honours degree in single or combined Honours French, German or Spanish; or degree in other relevant disciplines with substantial experience of living and working in continental Europe with the required language skills; or overseas equivalent; applicants are interviewed and take a diagnostic test to assess linguistic ability in French, German or Spanish, or in English for those who are not native speakers.

Course modules

Core modules: language development (French, German or Spanish); research into cultural identities; translation project; European cities in dictatorship and democracy; cultural representations in 21st century Europe; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is achieved through essays (in English and the target language), presentations, a dossier of oral and written items, a multi-task language exam, online submissions, a translation project and a dissertation (MA students).
