Therapeutic Practice for Psychological Trauma

This programme offers the opportunity to qualified and experienced therapeutic practitioners to gain training in a range of therapeutic modalities for treating psychological trauma: EMDR; trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT); mindfulness and compassionate mind training; it also explores cutting-edge research-based knowledge on the nature of psychological trauma from neurological, sociological and psychological perspectives.

Entry requirements

2.2 Honours degree; professional training in a therapeutic discipline such as clinical or counselling psychology, psychotherapy or counselling, and membership of an appropriate professional body such as the Health Professions Council or the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy; applicants should also have experience of working with psychological trauma; applicants who wish to undertake the trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) module must have an appropriate qualification in CBT.

Course modules

Core modules: Post-Traumatic Stress; therapeutic responses to psychological trauma; research methods; trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy; mindfulness and compassion-based approaches; supervised professional practice; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is via coursework; there are no examinations; the nature of the coursework varies across the modules and includes assignments, personal learning statements, evaluation of a simulation, a case study, client log, supervision reports and a dissertation.
