Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies: High Intensity Training

The programme is a clinical skills training programme aimed at mental health professionals with experience of working clinically within an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service (e.g. as a psychological wellbeing practitioner) who wish to become: Competent at assessing and treating adults with depression and anxiety disorders using evidence based cognitive and behavioural treatment protocols; accredited with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) as cognitive behavioural psychotherapists.

Entry requirements

Core professional training and at least 18 months post-qualification experience; or demonstrate core professional equivalence by submitting a British Association of Behavioural and Cognitives Pyschologies (BABCP) knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA) portfolio (available from BABCP website) alongside the application; a clinical placement in an IAPT service (minimum of 1 day per week for part-time students, or 2 days per week for full-time students); the opportunity to conduct face-to-face assessment and treatment of patients experiencing depression and anxiety disorders in the role of High Intensity Trainee using evidence based CBT treatments (typically 8-20 sessions); clinical supervision arrangements in place, with a BABCP accredited therapist (minimum of 1 hour per week on part-time pathway and 2 hours per week on full-time pathway); the clinical supervisor must undergo training regular supervision of supervision from the University CBT programme team; a level of practice that enables them to complete at least 8 therapy cases over duration of the programme; a good science-based degree or a core professional training (e.g. RMN) with research training experience; usually experience of working clinically within an IAPT service (e.g. as a psychological wellbeing practitioner); enhanced clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Course modules

Modules include: Core skills in CBT: Anxiety and depression; science-theory and practice of behavioural and cognitive therapy: Depression and anxiety; behavioural and cognitive psychotherapy: Complex presentations; supervised clinical practice: Depression and anxiety; research thesis.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: Videos of treatment sessions; clinical case studies; a critical essay; a clinical practice portfolio demonstrating 200 hours of clinical practice and the treatment of a minimum of 8 patients; a research thesis.
