Social Work

Students are expected to register with the General Social Care Council (GSCC), the social work profession's regulator, and adhere to the standards set out in the Code of Practice for Social Workers; home fee rates paid to the university are set by the GSCC.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree (minimum of upper 2nd Class Honours); GCSE grade C or above in English and mathematics, or equivalent; candidates must also complete a satisfactory health check and enhanced clearing from the Disclosure and Barring Service; experience of working in a social work/care or related environment is desirable.

Course modules

Year 1: Applied sociology and social policy; social work law and ethics; readiness for direct practice; human growth and development; placement 1 (70 days). Year 2: Social work practice with adults; social work practice with children and families; research methods; placement 2 (100 days).

Assessment methods

The programme uses a wide portfolio of assessment methods ranging from essays and case studies to examinations and presentations, as well as observations in placement; competency in information technology is required.
