Art Therapy

This course provides the student with a broad understanding of the theories and practices of art therapy necessary for safe and effective clinical work; it offers experience of clinical art therapy practice and supervision as well as group work and current theory.

Entry requirements

A degree in art or in another related area such as psychology, occupational therapy, nursing, social work; a sound current portfolio of artwork; 1 year's (full time or equivalent) relevant work experience which may be voluntary work; students should be able to show sufficient life experience and emotional maturity, as well as having the intellectual capacity to cope with the demand of the course; students need enhanced clearing from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), to provide protection when working with vulnerable clients; all prospective candidates need to attend an interview process which includes a short written piece of work and a discussion of the candidates' portfolio of art work; it is highly recommended that students attend an introduction, preliminary, or foundation course in art yherapy prior to applying for admission to this course.

Course modules

Modules include: Theoretical perspectives; therapeutics and communication; integrating theory and practice; placement preparation; placement experience; research; dissertation; the course also includes supervised clinical placements of 120 days in total.

Assessment methods

A variety of assessment methods is used including written work, seminar presentations, visual logs, practice placement records and reflective commentaries.
