Cultural History

The purpose of the MA is to ground and enhance your knowledge of cultural history. We define this concept broadly to mean ‘the study of people and their beliefs; the ideas that shape historical periods and their people; the low to high cultural forms that can be analysed to understand politics, culture and society’. You will encounter a range of cultural forms on this programme, some of which have traditionally been viewed as ‘elite’ (e.g. fine art, classic literature) and others that are unashamedly popular (e.g. cinema, television, popular music, comics and graphic novels).

Students who elect to follow the ‘taught route’ will take a core module examining aspects of British cultural history plus a further two taught modules, reflecting our staff team’s research specialisms. Alternatively, you may wish to follow the ‘research route’ which requires you to complete the core module plus two independent research modules. All students are required to complete a 12,000 to 15,000-word dissertation on a subject of their choice.

This MA will challenge you intellectually. We place considerable emphasis on the development of primary research skills and the enhancement of analytical and written skills.
