Secondary Education (Modern Foreign Languages: French and German)
The modern foreign languages route is designed to equip students to teach national curriculum modern foreign languages (MFL) across key stages 3 and 4 and to A-Level; there is also the option to gain some experience at key stage 2; successful completion of this course leads to qualified teacher status (QTS), subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests.
A degree at 2.2 or above in French, German or Spanish or in a subject where the content can be demonstrated to be at least 50 per cent modern foreign language; applicants are considered if they expect to acquire the necessary English and mathematics GCSE qualifications before the start of the course; all applicants also need enhanced clearance from the disclosure and barring service (DBS).
The course is assessed through observation during teaching placements and written assignments; to gain a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) students need to complete 3 assignments at level M (postgraduate), 2 blocks of school experience and skills tests in literacy and numeracy.
