Primary Education (General Primary, 5-11 years)

This course will help you understand how to meet children and young people's needs within and beyond the curriculum and to understand the diverse factors which contribute to these needs. It allows you to gain the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective primary school teacher, develop as an independent learner, and nurture the beliefs, values and self-motivation that you will need throughout your career. You will have the opportunity to spend over half of the 38-week course working with children. You will spend 48 days at university and 120 days on placement. With 4 placements in a variety of schools and settings, you will have a wealth of diverse classroom experience to take with you as you embark on your career as a primary or key stage 1 teacher. Entry requirements

Normally a 1st degree, or its equivalent with a minimum of 2.2 Honours; 3 GCSEs at minimum grade C or above to include English language, mathematics and science (including biology, chemistry or physics). All successful applicants must have met this requirement by 31 July 2015. Successful completion of the QTS skills test in literacy and numeracy before the start of the course. A minimum 10 days experience in a mainstream UK Primary school covering key stage 1 and key stage 2 (5 days in each key stage) gained within the last 2 years. A satisfactory academic (university) reference AND a satisfactory professional reference if more than 3 years since academic study; the ability to discriminate key ideas and express arguments; all candidates must demonstrate professional suitability through interview and must obtain medical and enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance according to established university procedures.

Course modules

Modules include: meeting children�s and young people�s needs within and beyond the curriculum; the creative and effective curriculum reflective practice; pedagogical excellence in key stage 1 and 2.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on essays, portfolios, presentations and placement practice.
