Primary Education (Lower Primary, 3-7 years)

The course is for students who wish to teach children aged 3-7. All modules cover child development, the statutory framework for the early years foundation stage 1. Other parts of the course involve reflection on and analysis of children as learners, cross-curricular learning and teaching, and innovative teaching approaches.

Entry requirements

Normally a 1st degree, or its equivalent with a minimum of 2.2 Honours; if you don�t have an undergraduate degree but do have a Masters or other higher qualification, your application will be considered by our academic tutors on a one-to-one basis. 3 GCSEs at minimum grade C or above to include English language, mathematics and science (including biology, chemistry or physics). All successful applicants must have met this requirement by 31 July 2015. Successful completion of the QTS skills test in literacy and numeracy by 31 July 2015. A minimum 10 days experience in a mainstream UK primary school covering foundation stage and key stage 1 (5 days in each key stage) gained within the last 2 years. A satisfactory academic (university) reference AND a satisfactory professional reference if more than three years since academic study. The ability to discriminate key ideas and express arguments. All candidates must demonstrate professional suitability through interview and must obtain medical and enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance according to established university procedures.

Course modules

Modules include: Meeting children�s and young people�s needs within and beyond the curriculum; the creative and effective curriculum; reflective practice; pedagogical excellence in key stage 1; early years foundation stage.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on essays, presentations, portfolios and placement practice.
