School Leadership

We will develop your knowledge, skills and expertise so that you will become a critically aware and confident school leader. You will develop and deploy enhanced skills in critical reflection and analysis of leadership behaviours, techniques and policies.

Entry requirements

1st or 2nd Class Honours degree. Students with other qualifications may be admitted to the course via accredited prior learning (APL) procedures.

Course modules

Core module: Reflecting on leadership practice. Optional modules: Closing the gap; leading an effective school; leading and improving whole school teaching; leading teaching; managing systems and processes; succeeding in headship; succeeding in senior leadership; educational excellence; operational management; strategic school leadership; introduction to coaching; introduction to adult learning. Students exiting at this point with 60 credits at Level 7 would receive a Postgraduate Certificate. Students exiting at this point with 120 credits at Level 7 would receive a Postgraduate Diploma. Professional practice enquiry 1; professional practice enquiry 2; students exiting at this point with 180 credits at Level 7 would receive a Masters School Leadership.

Assessment methods

Each module will incorporate the opportunity for students to gain formative feedback on their learning: In the 1st year of the programme, that formative feedback will consist largely of interaction with other students through the VLE activities associated with the module. Students will need to show evidence of engagement with the on-line learning activities associated with each module as an indication of the formative assessment process they have experienced. In year 2, modules will incorporate formative assessment opportunities through a variety of methods such as peer or self-review, tutor feedback and incremental writing opportunities. In year 3 of the programme, formative feedback will be provided through the support of a supervisor for each student.
