Greening Outdoor Practice
This course is designed to meet the growing concern about climate change and environmental sustainability, and to develop the potential of outdoor practice to make a real difference to these issues. Outdoor practitioners, or someone who uses the outdoors for educational work and those concerned about environmental issues may be interested in this course. It provides skills and knowledge needed to enhance environmental input in the programs they run. This course brings students up to speed on major environmental issues, local and global, and explores new ways to harness the power of outdoor experiences to help address them. As well as exploring how the environmental footprint of particular programs can be reduced, students look at ways of using outdoor courses to raise awareness of environmental issues; debate environmental values; connect participants (and colleagues) with the natural world and harness the inspirational potential of outdoor experience to encourage a shift towards more sustainable ways of living and working.
1st or 2nd Class Honours degree and/or relevant work experience; international students are welcome to apply. Students with other qualifications may be admitted to the course via APL procedures.
Core modules: Environmental issues (problems and responses). Optional modules: Critical perspectives of outdoor learning; experimental learning; integrated catchments; know your place; landscape interpretation for outdoor practitioners; monitoring catchments; working with adventure; independent study.
