Youth and Community Work

This course has been developed specifically for students with a 1st degree (orequivalent), and fieldwork experience in a youth or community work setting, who wish to gain a Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) professional range qualification. The full-time route is meant for students who can undertake full-time study and placements, whilst the part-time route is aimed at experienced people who are already working (including voluntary work) in a youth and communitywork setting and who can use that post astheir full-time placement.�The course attracts professional endorsement from the National Youth Agency, and successful completion leads to the status of Nationally Qualified Youth and Community Worker.

Entry requirements

1st or 2nd Class Honours degree; applicants will be invited for interview and should be able to demonstrate experience of work in youth and community work contexts. In addition, applicants will be required to be approved as medically suitable by the University Medical Officer, and to complete Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced clearance since they are regarded as potentially having unsupervised, substantial access to children and young people.

Course modules

Modules include: Youth work: practice and skills; youth work: theory and ideology; management and leadership: theory and practice; community work: theory and practice; the reflective practitioner; youth and community work in practice (practice placement).

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include a portfolio of individual work and group assignments. The assessment of placements for field-work is carried out by the university with reference to the recommendations of the agency supervisor, the university�s visiting tutor and the University criteria for assessment of placements. The student is involved in these discussions.
