Exercise and Health
Building on the legacy from the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, this programme bridges the gap between exercise and health, preparing you for work or further study in this exciting field. Core elements of this programme are modules on tackling obesity and mental health issues, which were both identified as key health issues by the Department of Health, and also locally by the Cumbria Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. It shall equip students with the tools and insights required to provide professional solutions to ill-health, maintaining healthy outcomes and preventing disease. Students will learn to understand the complex background to health risks, how to develop interventions, and how to critically analyse policy and practice.
1st or 2nd Class Honours degree. Students with other qualifications may be admitted to the course via accredited prior learning (APL) procedures.
Modules include: Tackling Obesity; Perspectives on mental health and exercise; research methods; exercise testing and prescription; advanced pathophysiology and disease in practice; active ageing; public health and social change; global issues and public health; business, management and commissioning in public health; dissertation. Students exiting the programme with 60 credits at Level 7 will receive a PGCert; students exiting the programme with 120 credits at Level 7 will receive a PGDip; students successfully achieving 180 credits at Level 7 will receive an MSc.
Assessment methods include: Academic essay; literature review; consultation practical; consultation report; intervention plan; portfolio; dissertation; research project; evaluation report.
