Oral Cancer (MRes)
Semester 1 provides in-depth teaching and directed study on the molecular biology of cancer, with a particular emphasis on oral cancer, and comprises 5 compulsory modules plus a mandatory course introduction/orientation. Following the successful completion of the taught modules 1-4, students are guided to focus on a specific research project, which, after completion of a series of practical classes and a relevant literature review, is carried out in semester 2 and throughout the remainder of the year.
1st or 2.1 BDS degree or 1st or 2.1 equivalent in a scientific discipline in the field of biological; biochemical or biomedical sciences (2.2 Honours degrees will be considered under exceptional circumstances), with flexibility for accreditation of prior or experiential learning. IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component less than 6.0 (or equivalent), if the 1st language is not English.
Modules include: cell proliferation and cancer; research techniques; cell signalling and cancer; cancer cell biology; oral cancer (aetiology, diagnosis and management).
Modules 1-4 will be assessed by examination (60 per cent) and coursework (40 per cent). The research project will be assessed by coursework and oral examination (100 per cent).
