Social Research Methods

This course seeks to introduce students to a portfolio of research skills that help them not only to become competent researchers but also to expand their employment horizons. The course emphasises that it is important not only to understand how to use a particular research tool, but also to consider the wider meanings of how knowledge can be constructed in different ways and for diverse range of purposes; a particular feature of the course is the analysis of large datasets and plus GIS skills.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree in geography or a cognate social science such as economics; planning; sociology; social work. IELTS of 6.5 (or equivalent), if the 1st language is not English.

Course modules

Core modules: Research training, social theory; quantitative methods in social research; qualitative methods in social research. Students also choose from one of research in practice (work placement); applied GIS and geospatial data analysis; population vulnerability and resilience.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through coursework, examination and a dissertation.
