Film Studies

This course provides a grounding in the key approaches to the analysis of film and television for students with little or know formal training in film and television studies; students with a background in film and television studies are able to deepen and extend existing knowledge and understanding. With a broad range of theoretical and practical modules that explore the history, political significance and formal qualities of sound and image, the School prepares people for a variety of careers in the media, archiving, journalism, teaching and elsewhere.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a good honours degree at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Compulsory modules: Film studies: history, theory, criticism, dissertation.
Optional modules: Science fiction: film and television; effects, audiences and the media;the big picture: contemporary hollywood cinema; middle eastern cinemas; women and film; and many more.

Assessment methods

Assessment is on the basis of coursework: including, but not limited to, performance in class; placements; essays and seminar papers; and the final dissertation, of 15,000-20,000 words.
