University of East Anglia UEA
The Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas
This course provides students with detailed knowledge of the visual arts, contemporary and historical, of the 3 geographical areas. It also highlights the methodological and theoretical issues involved in their analysis and display, both in their original contexts and in the contexts of museums and exhibitions. Consideration of this material occurs at the interface of anthropology, art history, archaeology and museology. The course is therefore essentially cross-disciplinary to frame regional developments and important shared themes. Throughout the programme, there is a strong emphasis on comparison and examination of current theory, while highlighting the complexity of each area.
Applicants require a good Honours degree at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent, in anthropology, art history or related subject. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries.
Core modules: Africa section; Americas section; Oceania section; dissertation; museology timed essay.
Research seminars, gallery talks, essays, one timed essay, and a dissertation of up to 15,000 words.
