American Studies

Students on this course explore the events and forces that shaped the United States, and gain a deeper understanding of how this powerful nation moulds and influences the cultural, political, and economic lives of its own peoples and the world; the course specialises in a combined study of cultural theory, urbanism, history and international relations.

Entry requirements

Students should hold a minimum 2.1 Honours degree or overseas equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries.

Course modules

Compulsory module: Theories of American culture; plus 2 other modules taught within the School of American studies, for example: twentieth century American novel; the black Atlantic; slave life in the antebellum south; Native American history; American foreign policy interventions; race and resistance; gender and genre in contemporary cinema; postcolonial Theory. The 4th module is free choice; students can select from within the School of American studies, or take a module in another School from a complementary MA programme.

Assessment methods

Assessment is on the basis of coursework (essays and sometimes class presentations) and the dissertation. The dissertation of 12-15,000 words counts for half the marks of the course.
