American History

Students on this course explore the events and forces that shaped the United States, and gain a deeper understanding of how this powerful nation moulds and influences the cultural, political, and economic lives of its own peoples and the world.

Entry requirements

Students should hold a minimum 2.1 Honours degree or overseas equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all four components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in one of the listed countries.

Course modules

The MA in American History offers students a range of modules in the fields of American slavery, Native American history, race, and foreign policy. All students take Theories of American Culture and choose 2 other modules taught within the School of American Studies. The 4th module is a free choice; students can select an additional American History module or take a module in a complementary MA programme.

Assessment methods

Assessment is on the basis of coursework (essays and sometimes class presentations) and the dissertation. The dissertation of 12-15,000 words counts for half the marks of the course.

Sponsorship information

The UEA offers a number of scholarships for UK/EU and international students which are based on academic merit.
