University of East Anglia UEA
American Studies and Film Studies
Students on this course explore the events and forces that shaped the United States, and gain a deeper understanding of how this powerful nation moulds and influences the cultural, political, and economic lives of its own peoples and the world; the course also enables students to study American films within their historical and cultural context.
Students should hold a minimum 2.1 Honours degree or overseas equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border agencies tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. For a full list of these, as well as the qualifications / tests that we will consider, please visit our website.
Students take 1 core module: Theories of American culture; 1 module from the School of American Studies and 1 from those on offer in the School of Film and Television Studies; the 4th module is optional and may be chosen from American or Film Studies modules or from complementary MA programmes.
Assessment is on the basis of coursework (essays and sometimes class presentations) and the dissertation. The dissertation of 12-15,000 words counts for half the marks of the course.
The UEA offers a number of scholarships for UK/EU and international students which are based on academic merit.
