Broadcast Journalism (Theory and Practice)

This course is designed to give students both core practical and theoretical skills in the field of journalism and electronic communications � equipping students for work within the communications industries, or an academic career. As well as gaining practical broadcast and journalistic skills, students will develop the ability to reflect critically on the nature and limitations of news coverage. Key issues in news and media studies will be covered and also legal and ethical concerns for media professionals. Students will practice interviewing, reporting and video production and learn how to produce and structure broadcast and online news stories. The course is supported by the EU �SeaMedia� project, which provides a public platform for student work.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2.1 Honours degree or overseas equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all four components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries.

Course modules

Core modules: broadcast journalism; contemporary journalism: practice and ethics; psi dissertation by practice. Optional modules: essential UK public affairs and law for journalists; media and society; free speech; new media and society; politics and media; studying media.

Assessment methods

Theory or practice-based dissertation.
