Medieval History

This course focuses on the period 1050-1300 and is designed to provide the opportunity for specialist study in seminar groups of various key topics, and for the compilation of a sustained piece of independent work on a topic of particular interest to the candidate; students gain the technical skills needed by the medieval historian: medieval Latin; the study of handwriting (palaeography); and the study of the form of documents (diplomatic).

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree in history (or history-related subject) required, at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

The compulsory modules are: England and the Continent in the Middle Ages; Latin and Paleography; plus the Medieval History Dissertation.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed through coursework and the dissertation of 15-20,000 words which constitutes half the credits for the degree.
