Modern British History

This course aims to provide students with an advanced understanding of different approaches to the study of Britain and the world in the 19th and 20th centuries; based on an impressive concentration of expertise, there is a focus on foreign policy between the age of Palmerston and World War II, set in the context of post-imperialism and globalisation in the post-war era; using key secondary texts and primary sources, the course range widely between the abolition of slavery, gunboat diplomacy, the Cold War, and modern Anglo-American relations.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree in history or history-related subject, at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent required. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Students take the compulsory module - The Politics of British Foreign Policy, 1850-1940. Also an optional module from Energy, Economy and Environment in Historical Perspective; From the Zenith of Imperial Prestige to the Nadir of British Power: The British Empire 1919-1956; or Nationalism and Violence in 20th-Century Europe plus the Modern British History Dissertation of 15-20,000 words.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed through coursework and the dissertation of 15-20,000 words which constitutes half the credits for the degree.
