Early Modern History

This course provides an in-depth examination of the nature of power, authority, ideology and culture in England between the reformation and the early 18th century.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree in history (or history-related subject) required, or equivalent overseas qualification. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Students take 4 compulsory modules; society, politics and culture in early modern England; English paleography; the controversies and the classics; and the dissertation module.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by several pieces of written work plus a research-based dissertation of 14,000-16,000 words carried out under the supervision of a member of faculty.
