Modern European History

Students broaden and deepen their knowledge of European history since the 19th century, with particular emphasis on Russian, German, and Balkan history; students are encouraged to read deeply into national histories, but also to make comparisons and to view the histories of individual states in context.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree in history (or history related subject), at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Students take the core module - Modernity in Russia, plus 1 from energy, economy and environment in historical perspective or nationalism and violence in 20th-century Europe plus the modern European history dissertation.

Assessment methods

Students are required to complete a written dissertation of 16,000-18,000 words.
