Social and Political Theory
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the political issues and controversies addressed by modern and contemporary political theorists; an understanding of different normative and epistemological perspectives and of how these affect political debate and policy; skills in qualitative and quantitative methods and research design which equips them to proceed to a research degree in this or related social science areas; and a grasp of theoretical argument and analytical techniques which enables them to undertake employment as public policy professionals.
Good Honours degree at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent required. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Core modules: History of political thought; methods of social enquiry; dissertation. optional modules from a list including: better worlds? utopias and dystopias; critical theories of the western self; democratic theory; international relations theory.
Assessment is based on a mix of dissertation, essays, research papers and performance in seminars.
The UEA offers a number of scholarships for UK/EU and international students which are based on academic merit.
