Language and Intercultural Communication

The aim of the course is to provide students with a firm grounding in the theories and methods of contemporary linguistics; on this groundwork they are able to explore social, cultural and political aspects of language or to explore contemporary research on language and the brain.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree at minimum 2.1 or equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Modules include: Linguistic communication among cultures; intercultural communication (understanding differences in a global world; the power of discourse (representation and interaction).

Assessment methods

Assessment is on the basis of coursework and the dissertation.
