Public Policy and the Environment

This cross-disciplinary course is grounded in a political science understanding of general public policy-making and change. It takes you through the main theories, models and concepts and how these are applied to policy making, comparing environmental, social and other areas of public policy. You will also study decision-making about the environment more widely, including individual and cultural framings, values, and societal changes, whilst also taking optional studies in politics, international development or law.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree at minimum 2.1 standard or equivalent. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Core modules: Public policy: theory and analysis, public management: theories and change; dissertation. optional modules from a list including: climate change policy for development; environmental assessment effectiveness; participatory environmental decision-making; sustainable consumption; understanding global environmental change.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on a mix of dissertation, essays, research papers and performance in seminars.
