Forensic Linguistics and Translation

This is an interdisciplinary course that focuses on language and communication in highly sensitive contexts of investigative interviews and translation in criminal and civil justice; it brings cutting-edge interdisciplinary research to the fore and contextualises it in the latest theoretical and applied background of linguistics, psychology and the law; the focus is on what it is easy or hard to express in spoken and written communication in different languages and the challenges this presents for translation.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in humanities or social sciences. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose 1st language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries. Course modules

Modules include: Forensic linguistics and translation; translation in context; optional modules from the course catalogue.

Assessment methods

Coursework, including presentations and essays, and a 15,000-20,000 dissertation.
