Advanced Practitioner

This course is for senior clinicians and health care practitioners who wish to fulfil their own personal and professional development needs whilst contributing to their organisation's modernisation agenda and advancing their practice and leading the service delivery for their client group/practice locality. The course meets the NMC 'Draft Standards for Advanced Practice' and enables practitioners to develop their skills and services related to any of the clinical pathways. The practice-based programme is multi-professional and aims to reflect collaborative methods of inquiry that will appeal to a broad range of health care professions with experience of a variety of health care sectors. Speciality degree programmes for the course include: Emergency care practitioner; midwife; neonatal nurse; nurse; occupational therapy; paramedic; pharmacist; physiotherapist.

Entry requirements

Applicants require: a 2.2 Honours degree in a health care profession; current professional registration; plus a minimum of 2 years post registration practice experience. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 7.0 overall, with a minimum of 7.0 in all components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries.

Course modules

Core modules: introduction to research methods; pathophysiology: nature and nurture; clinical assessment; research dissertation. Optional modules include: long term conditions; work based learning; further quantitative research methods; further qualitative research methods; healthcare law and ethics; leadership and management in practice; independent and supplementary prescribing; new-born infant physical examination; minor injuries for advanced practitioners.
