The major research areas in pure mathematics are: number theory; combinatorics; group theory; representation theory; model theory; set theory; and ergodic theory & dynamical systems; in applied mathematics major research areas are: fluid dynamics, mechanics of solids, geophysical fluid dynamics and mathematical biology; postgraduate research students are allocated an expert supervisor who helps direct their research and learning and a secondary supervisor with a pastoral role; there is a regular programme of research seminars given by visiting speakers, highlighting the wider research activities currently taking place in mathematics; postgraduate students are encouraged to undertake some paid demonstrating work for the school; research supervision is available in the following areas: algebra and combinatorics; mathematical logic; number theory; fluid dynamics fluid flow stability from theoretical models to engineering applications; solid mechanics; geophysical fluid dynamics; mathematical biology; recent thesis titles include: prime appearance in elliptic divisibility sequences; numerical and analytical studies on nonlinear free surface flows past disturbances; symptotic models for boundary-value problems of constrained and unconstrained thermoelasticity; violent sea wave impacts on coastal structures; arithmetic and zeta functions; modular homology in the Boolean algebra of subsets.

Entry requirements

Candidates should have, or expect to have a 1st Class or (exceptionally) an Upper 2nd Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in mathematics; IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each component).

Sponsorship information

Each school has funding for some projects; eligibility rules may apply; UEA offers a limited number of ISF scholarships, up to 50 per cent of tuition fees, to excellently qualified overseas (non-EU) students each year; these awards are based on academic merit.
