Economics and International Relations

MSc Economics and International Relations provides a platform to understand international economics and politics from an interdisciplinary perspective. The course gives you considerable flexibility to choose an area of geographical specialisation. It will allow you to develop skill highly desired by employers; an ability to understand international institutions and geopolitics, as well as the analytical skills of economics. It is taught in collaboration with the School of Political, Social and International Studies, which also has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary research and teaching. The programme should appeal to those who wish to pursue a career in the areas of international business or international relations.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a 2.2 Honours degree, or equivalent, in Economics or another related subject. All applicants who are not a British national and/or whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency. This is equivalent to an IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components, although we do accept many other types of qualifications or tests. In accordance with the UK Border Agencies Tier 4 visa guidelines, we will also waive the English language requirement for applicants who meet the defined nationality test or who have completed a degree level course in 1 of the listed countries.

Course modules

Core modules: Econometric Methods; Economic Concepts; International Relations Theory; International Trade. Optional modules: Financial Mathematics; International Finance; Multinational Firms; Natural Resources and Environmental Economics; The Foreign Relations of China and Japan in the Modern World.

Assessment methods

Assessment will be carried out through combinations of coursework and exams. You will also write a dissertation on a topic of your choice, supervised individually by an academic from the School.
